Repertoire & Music Lists

Music is very important in the life of St Thomas'.  St Thomas' is the only Church in the Guildford Diocese, and one of only 42 churches in the UK, to maintain a choir of men and boys as well as a separate choir for girls. One or more of the Choirs is included in most services and the singing is usually accompanied by the magnificent Nicholson pipe organ that the church keeps fully restored.

Music at Services varies from week to week, and season to season.  Click the links below to see the music we have sung at our services recently, or further down the page to discover our full repertoire.

Our Full Repertoire

The choirs sing a varied repertoire of music at Eucharist and Evensong, from the reign of Elizabeth I to that of Elizabeth II, and including both English and European composers. Most of the repertoire is traditional 4-part SATB, but 3-, 4- and 5-part men only ATB settings are also frequently performed, as well as pieces for treble voices only. There are variations in repertoire between the different choirs, but with a common core. While the music spans 5 centuries, settings of the Elizabethan and Stuart periods are especially popular. St Thomas is fortunate to have an extensive music library, which provides considerable opportunity for variety in the choice of music.

During the three years from September 2008 to July 2011, the choir had 602 rehearsals and sang 129 Eucharists, 61 evensongs, seven weddings, two Christmas concerts, a host of extra services and one live radio broadcast, adding up to a grand total of 211 choral services, during which they sang 4 different sets of evensong responses, 26 different service settings, 65 psalms, 448 anthems and motets, and 655 hymns!

EUCHARIST

At the 10.00 am Choral Eucharist on Sundays the Choir and congregation sing the Gloria to the setting by Thorne. The choir usually sings the Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei to a variety of other settings. The Creed is said. During Advent and Lent the Kyrie is sung in place of the Gloria.
