Giving to Fund Our Churches

It costs almost £5,000 a week to fund the activities of The Bourne Parish, including

          ·         The Vicar and Ministry Team

          ·         Our activities for Children and Young People

          ·         The Choir and  Music which enhance our worship

          ·         The Parish Office

          ·         Cleaning, heating and maintaining our churches and halls

          ·         Maintaining a wide range of activities in our local community

The Bourne Parish Budget 2016

Parish share covers the full cost of employing and housing our vicar (£46,000) and our contribution to Diocesan support and national church support (£41,000).

Around 60% of the funds needed to pay for parish activities comes from regular, committed, Gift Aided giving by parishioners and supporters. We receive no financial support from the Church of England nationally.

Currently 160 individuals, couples, households and families support The Bourne Parish through regular giving. Many are able to give via the Gift Aid scheme so that the parish receives tax refunds of 25% from HMRC. Higher rate taxpayers may also receive a tax credit for charitable giving.

It’s easy to give

You can give:

  • By joining the Parish Giving Scheme and setting up a monthly or annual direct debit from your bank account. This method is encouraged as it reduces our administration and improves our cash flow, as the parish receives Gift Aid each month. If you’d like to use this method please email our stewardship co-ordinator, Tim Devis tdevis@btinternet.com, and he will provide the relevant forms and an explanation of the system.
  • By regular standing order via Gift Aid if possible. The forms are easy to complete, explain Gift Aid, and can be downloaded via this link.
  • By making a donation in one of the yellow Gift Aid envelopes available at each of our churches.
  • By posting a cheque and Gift Aid form to:

         The Stewardship Recorder
         The Bourne Parish
         St Thomas-on-The Bourne
         Frensham Road
         Farnham GU9 8HA

All donations will be treated in confidence.

Why giving is important

There is a strong Biblical basis for Christian giving. If you wish to explore this, please read and consider the following passages from the Bible:

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians, 9: 6-7

Generous giving should be:

A priority (Deuteronomy 26: 2-3. 1 Corinthians 16:2)

Prayerful (1 Chronicles 29: 1-14)

Planned (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Proportionate (1 Corinthians 16:2. 2 Corinthians 8:11-13)

Sacrificial (Luke 21:1-4).

How much should I give?

The Church of England’s guidance is to donate 5% of disposable income to your local church and 5% to other charities.

Total committed giving by around 160 individuals or households in The Bourne Parish is around £110,000 a year, before Gift Aid refunds.

On average, this works out at just above £13.20 per giver/household per week.  Although this represents an increase in giving levels since 2011 it is still well below the average achieved across all the parishes in Guildford diocese.  The chart below illustrate this.

The total amount committed on a regular basis by our parish members and supporters amounts to around £110,000 a year. Almost half comes from around 20 individuals or households which each donate more than £1,000 a year.  The Bourne is the 14th most affluent parish in Guildford diocese.  If ranked 14th by level of giving, our weekly average would be almost double that currently achieved – we have plenty of scope for improvement!

Giving is a personal decision and all giving to The Bourne Parish is dealt with in the strictest confidence.
